Sizzla recovering at home...after accident

While on the road to full recovery, deejay Miguel 'Sizzla Kalonji' Collins will be away from the music scene following his bike accident late last month. The deejay was released from hospital on Sunday.

Last month, the artiste was involved in a serious bike accident in St Ann where he was hit off his bike while travelling along the Salem Runaway Bay main road in Runaway Bay, St Ann. After being admitted to the St Ann's Bay Hospital in serious but stable condition, the deejay was taken to an undisclosed hospital in Kingston where he remained for almost two weeks until his release on Sunday.

According to a statement previously released by Sizzla's publicist, Olimatta Taal, the artiste received several broken bones and had internal bleeding from a ruptured liver.

A source close to the singjay told The STAR yesterday that the deejay has been recovering at home since his release. They said, "He's coming along very well, he's been taking the time to rest and let his body heal."

The source further told The STAR that the deejay would be away from the music scene for an undisclosed period of time, as he will not be performing at stage shows or recording new music, until his health is back to normal.

"I can't say how along it'll take him to recover but the healing process so far is going extremely quick, so keep the prayers positive," they said.
Sizzla, who hails from August Town in St Andrew, is known for hits such as Praise Ye Jah, Black Woman and Child, Thank You Mama among a slew of conscious songs and dancehall tracks.

In June, the singjay, known for his high-pitched notes, released his 65th album titled The Scriptures. The album was produced by John John and launched at his Waterhouse studio. Sizzla was scheduled to do a series of tours in Africa, Japan, Brazil, Guyana, among countries in the Caribbean to promote the album. However, following his accident the tours have now been postponed.

Capleton’s show a success despite gay protest

Capleton wowed his audience at a concert in Brampton, Ontario, despite protest from local gay rights groups.
The protests prompted organisers to move the Canada Day concert from the original venue in downtown Toronto — which was hosting pride week activities. Capleton’s manager Claudette Kemp told theObserver that the show went well with the 43-year-old artiste holding the attention of his audience, who had not seen him perform in that North American city for some time. She further noted that the artiste has such a wide repertoire, that there was no need to re-hash songs of the past, which may be considered offensive to certain groups or individuals.
The concert was originally scheduled for the Sound Academy in Toronto, but had to be relocated after the mangements of the venue was contacted by a leading gay rights advocacy group in Canada, which had also alerted the hate crimes unit of the Toronto police.
Meanwhile, Kemp indicated that her artiste is now gearing up for his annual summer stage show and fund-raiser, A St Mary Mi Come From, which will be held at the Gray’s Inn Sports Complex in Annotto Bay, St Mary on August 5.
She disclosed that this year the theme for the concert is unity, noting that there is currently too much discord in the society at this time and therefore Capleton has decided to promote unity at this year’s show.
A St Mary Mi Come from, is the prime fund-raiser for Capleton’s foundation which supports various charitable organisations and schools in St Mary on an ongoing basis.

The Shaggy Make A Difference Foundation has done it again.

The official handing over of medical equipment was held on the grounds of the Bustamante Hospital for Children (BHC) on Friday.

The ceremony involved the handing over of US$350,000 (J$30 million) worth of medical equipment, which was raised at the 2010 staging of the Shaggy and Friends benefit concert.

There was also the presentation of a cheque from Chain of Hope to the director of the foundation, Rebecca Packer.

Lisa D'Oyen, administrator of the Chain of Hope children's charity, presented the cheque, valued at US $10,500 (J$903,000). Three computers were also donated by Flow, and two flat screens that were placed at both sides of the tent, displayed the different equipment as Dr Michelle-Anne Richards-Dawson, senior medical officer at BHC, explained their use.

After the ceremony, guests were allowed to view the equipment which include surgical stretchers, Bair Hugger Patient Warmers, a blood warmer, a surgical microscope, examination lamps, infusion pumps, pulse oximeters, vital signs monitors and syringe pumps.

According to Patricia Ingram-Martin, acting director of nursing services, the most expensive piece of equipment on display was the blood gas analyser. This is used to determine the alkaline level or how acidic the blood is.

"It has been a long process this time around because we had to be sure we were getting everything the hospital needed," Rebecca Packer said.

Packer compared the process to childbirth as she described the preparation as stressful and sometimes heart-rending but has its rewards. "We definitely feel like we're making a difference and that's what the foundation is about," she said.

With such an astounding accomplishment, Packer spoke about surpassing this year's achievement. "I'm hoping (we will). We can only get bigger and better and I think the awareness is there. When you do a presentation like this and the Jamaican public sees where their money went, that's the impact we're looking for."

The foundation, which started in 2009, is the only one of its kind, where a concert has repeatedly pledged and delivered 100 per cent of its proceeds to its cause.

Although he wasn't present, Shaggy was streamed live from Los Angeles where he was scheduled to appear on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno

Mavado will make his first appearance on US soil Sept 4th

With his US visa re-instated, deejay Mavado will make his first appearance on US soil at the inaugural Reggae Rhythm & Blues concert, which takes place at Roy Wilkins Park in Queens, New York on Labour Day — September 4.
"This performance by Mavado will be extra special, as it will showcase his musical dexterity and the many sides of David Brooks. Mavado is a rare talent and one of the best we have seen in recent years. He has many great songs and that's the side we are hoping to showcase," explained event organiser and CEO of Irie Jam Media, Bobby Clarke .

Joining Mavado on stage will be Kenny 'Babyface' Edmonds, singer Tarrus Riley and soca star Machel Montano. Babyface is of course the successful R&B, pop singer, songwriter, keyboardist, record producer, film producer and entrepreneur who has written and produced songs for some of the biggest names in contemporary music, including Toni Braxton, Boyz II Men, Whitney Houston and TLC.
Mavado made his entry in the music business with the critically acclaimed album Gangsta for Life, which includes hit singles Fathers Prayer, Cassava Piece Radio, Sadness, Gully Side, and On The Go (Faster Than Bullet). In recent months he has been a staple on reggae charts globally, reeking havoc with Star Boy, Stulla, Mad Over and Delilah which is currently enjoying multiple spins on urban stations in the USA. He won the 2010 EME award for "Male Singjay of the Year" and is featured alongside some of rap's biggest stars in the remix of Welcome to My Hood by DJ Khaled.

Held at the York College in Queens, New York, on June 5, Reggae 4 Japan is the charity show organised by Japanese Sound Mighty Crown, their management Irish and Chin, alongside VP Records.

Thursday, January 27, 2011 JAMAICAN reggae artiste Mark Myrie, better known by his stage name Buju Banton, will on February 14 — Valentine's Day — begin another battle for his freedom in a federal court in the United States where he will be retried on drug and gun-related charges. The date was set yesterday by Judge James Moody for the highly anticipated second trial in the Sam M Gibbons Federal Court in Tampa, Florida. "February 14 is Valentine's Day. We hope the jury gives us some love," said the entertainer's attorney David Markus, who expressed hope that his client would be acquitted. Added Markus: "Buju is optimistic and hopeful. He is in good spirits. He is a rock. No one realises how hard it is to fight the federal government in one trial, let alone two." Banton was last tried in September on charges of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine, and aiding and abetting the possession of a firearm during a drug-trafficking offence. However, the 12-member panel of jurors was unable to reach a verdict following three days of deliberations. That trial lasted a little over a week. The second trial is scheduled to last as long. The trial was supposed to start last December but was postponed so Banton, who is on US$250,000 bail and is subjected to house arrest, could spend time with his family. It is not yet known if Banton will be tried on the previous charges or the additional charges tacked on by the prosecution in a new indictment. The new indictment is being challenged by the entertainer's legal team, and both the prosecution and defence are awaiting a ruling on the matter. Should the new indictment stand, Banton will be tried for conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute cocaine, attempted possession with the intent to distribute cocaine, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug-trafficking offence, and using the wires to facilitate a drug-trafficking offence. If convicted, Banton faces up to 20 years' imprisonment. The United States Government would also seek to seize the artiste's assets. Banton was arrested in December of 2009 following the arrests of two other men, Ian Thomas and James Mack, who subsequently pleaded guilty. The gun was actually in the car that Mack drove.

TAMPA, Florida — The prosecution called its main witness to the stand this morning as the second day of the trial involving Reggae superstar Buju Banton got underway in this city.
Alexander Johnson, the Colombian informant who is assisting in trying to secure a conviction against the artiste, testified that he met Banton on a flight from Madrid, Spain to Miami Florida. The flight lasted eight hours, Johnson said, and a conversation about drug dealing come up within an hour.
The prosecution then played recordings where Banton, whose real name is Mark Myrie, was heard telling Johnson, "I am about making money, straight up' and "I have 15 children to send to school".
Myrie was also heard asking Johnson if he had any contacts to acquire cocaine as he was willing to finance a deal. He also told Johnson that he did not have contacts in Venezuela and Panama but that he was involved in smuggling drugs from Africa to Europe.
He was also heard telling Johnson that "It would be good to have our own contacts. I would like to start small with five keys as I don't want to take any risks".
The artiste also warned the informant that he should stay away from a man known as Lloyd Evans as "There are a lot of snitches in the game".
Myrie, dressed in a grey sports coat, shook his head while the recordings were being played. One of his female supporters covered her ears when the recordings were being played, while others chuckled in disbelief. Others seemed captivated by the recordings.
Yesterday Myrie's attorney David Markus told the court that his client was guilty of talking a lot and had made a crucial mistake of sampling contraband. He also painted Johnson as a well paid Government informant who entrapped people to get involved in drug dealing.
Drug Enforcement Agent Daniel McCeaffrey also testified yesterday that despite investigating the artiste for a year, he had uncovered no evidence to suggest that Myrie was involved in any drug deal or had benefitted from any drug deal.
The court is now in recess and Johnson is set to resume his testimony at 1:30 Tampa time in courthouse 13A in the Gibbons US Court in downtown Tampa.

Drake's Video With Mavado Being Criticized

Rapper Drake and his video director Anthony Mandler who shot the stars latest video 'Find Your Love,' in Jamaica are now facing criticism for the plot used in the video. Dancehall artist Mavado makes a significant appearance in the video where he is portrayed as the villain in the video. The minister of tourism Edmund Bartlett caught wind of this video and is not happy with the image that it paints of Jamaica especially under these tough times.

Director Anthony Mandler defends the video by adding that everyone is just acting. He insisted that "the video is completely dramatic and completely scripted. This could have taken place in 50 other countries, it is not restricted to Jamaica." Drake plays a man who falls in love with a woman in Jamaica and Mavado's character name Puffy and his gully posse is not having it, so they kidnapp Drake's character. The video ends with a gunshot, which the minister adds "is not enhancing to the gun culture."

Mad Cobra Shooting

Mad Cobra who was shot earlier this week has been released out of the hospital on injuries. The deejay was driving along Marlin Avenue in Braeton, Portmore when his vehicle lights had shoned bright on a group of men who became upset by this and responded by shooting the artist. Police say Cobra, who's real name is Ewart Everton Brown did try to calm the situation.

After the shooting Cobra was admitted to the Spanish Town Hospital and treated for gunshot wounds to his upper body. He is now released and back at home resting after being the second artist to be shot this past week, with the first being Oneil Edwards of the group Voicemail, who was shot multiple times in front of his house by a robber.

Vybz Kartel Banned Again

Ever since the new year it was reported that Vybz kartel & Mavado had been banned from performing in certain Islands due to the extremity of their music lyrics and the effect that it has been having on the youths. Kartel had so far been banned by Grenada, Guyana, and Barbados, but now most recently St. Lucia has also been added to that list.

The deejay was scheduled to do a huge show in St. Lucia for May 1st, but due to the kind of negative attention it had been drawing throughout the island, the committee has now come to a final decision to cancel the artist after having gone through a long two week contreversy regarding the upcoming concert.
Vybz Kartel who has never been able to perform in the United States nor some other countries abroad, had always been able to stage his music throughout the different Caribbean Islands but now that too seems to be coming to a halt, which may scream serious financial setbacks for the deejays music career.

Top Deejays Getting Their United States Visas Revoked

After the recent turn of events surrounding many deejay artists of Jamaica it seems that the United States embassy has been making some changes. After the U.S. visas of Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Aidonia, Mavado and Ricky Trooper had been revoked many other artists are being noted to have also taken the hit, most recent reports states that deejay Tony Matterhorn has also had his U.S. visa cancelled.

Due to these cancellations it has however made room for other top artists who still hold their visas to have greater advantages, although promoters and booking agents are still nervous as to whether things may also change for those artists, considering the fact that the embassy has given no specific or actual reason as to why the artists visas are being revoked. Artists who still currently hold their U.S. visas include Lady Saw, Elephant Man, Chino, Assassin and Voice Mail.

Buju Banton Undergoing Punishment In Prison

It has been reported that reggae super star Buju Banton has been transfered to a higher security section at the Pinellas County Jail in Tampa, Florida. A punishment that was given to him for giving his food to another inmate.

Buju Banton who is a rastafarian vegetarian has lost a significant amount of weight since he has been at the prison due to the fact that he has not been provided with the right food in accordance to his religious beliefs and diet.

The artist who was charged back in December with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than five kilograms of cocaine and accused of participating with two associates in a drug deal to buy cocaine from an undercover federal agent, is currently suffering with his physical and mental health.

His lawyer David Markus has filed for him to be moved to a different detention centre in South Florida, although hours from the federal courthouse, he feels that this move would be much better for Banton's health.

The name fittingly given to one of the most affluent All-BLACK Communities in America , was bombed from the air and Burned to the ground by mobs of envious Whites. In a period spanning fewer than 12 hours, a once thriving Black Business District in northern Tulsa lay smoldering -- a model Community destroyed and a major African-American economic movement resoundingly defused. The Night's Carnage left some 3,000 African Americans Dead and over 600 Successful Businesses Lost. Among these were 21 Churches, 21 Restaurants, 30 Grocery Stores and 2 Movie Theaters, plus A Hospital, A Bank, a Post Office, Libraries, Schools, Law Offices, a half dozen Private Airplanes and even A Bus System.
As could have been expected, the impetus behind it all was the infamous Ku Klux Klan, working in consort with Ranking City Officials and many other Sympathizers.

The best description of BLACK WALLSTREET, or Little Africa as it was also known, would be to compare it to a mini - Berverly Hills.
It was the golden door of the BLACK Community during the early 1900s, and it proved that African Americans could create a successful infrastructure.
That's What BLACK WALLSTREET, Was All About. The Dollar circulated 36 to 100 Times, sometimes taking a year for currency to leave the Community.

Now a Dollar leaves the BLACK Community in 15-minutes. As Far As Resources,There were Ph.D.'s residing in Little Africa, BLACK Attorneys and Doctors. One Doctor was Dr. Berry who owned the Bus System. His average income was $500 a Day, a hefty pocket change in 1910. It was a time when the entire State of Oklahoma had only 2 Airports, yet 6 BLACKS, Owned their own Planes. It was a very Fascinating Community. The mainstay of the Community was to educate every child. Nepotism was the one word they Believed in. And that's what we need to get back to.The main thoroughfare was Greenwood Avenue, and it was intersected by Archer and Pine Streets. From the First Letters in each of those Three Names you get G.A.P. And that's where the renowned R and B Music Group The GAP Band got its name. They're From Tulsa.

BLACK WALLSTREET was a prime example of the typical, BLACK Community in America that did businesses, but it was in an unusual location.
You See, At The Time, Oklahoma was set aside to be a BLACK and Indian State . There were over 28 BLACK Townships there. One third of the People who traveled in the terrifying "Trail of Tears" along side the Indians between 1830 and 1842 were BLACK People. The Citizens of this proposed Indian and BLACK State Chose A BLACK Governor, A Treasurer from Kansas named McDade. But the Ku Klux Klan said that if he assumed Office that they would Kill Him within 48 hours. A lot of BLACKS owned Farmland, and many of them had gone into the Oil Business.
The Community was so tight and Wealthy because they traded Dollars hand-to-hand, and because they were dependent upon one another as a result of the Jim Crow Laws.

It was not unusual that if a Resident's Home accidentally Burned down, it could be rebuilt within a few weeks by Neighbors. This was the type of scenario that was going on Day-to-Day on BLACK WALLSTREET.

When BLACKs intermarried into the Indian Culture, some of them received their promised '40 Acres and A Mule' and with that came whatever Oil was later found on the Properties.

On BLACK WALLSTREET, A lot of Global Business was conducted, The Community flourished from the Early 1900s until June 1, 1921. That's when the Largest Massacre of Nonmilitary Americans in the History of this Country took place, and it was lead by The KU KLUX KLAN. Imagine walking out of your front door and seeing 1,500 Homes being Burned. It must have been amazing.

Survivors we interviewed think that the whole thing was planned because during the time that all of this was going on; White Families with their children stood around the borders of their Community and watched The Massacre. The looting and everything -- much in the same manner they would watch a Lynching. The Riots weren't caused by anything Black or White. It was caused by jealousy. A lot of White Folks had come back from World War I and they were poor. When they looked over into The BLACK Communities and realized that BLACK Men who Fought in The War had come, Home Heroes that helped trigger the destruction. It cost the BLACK Community everything, and not a single dime of restitution--No Insurance Claims--has been awardedthe victims to this day. Nonetheless, they rebuilt. We estimate 1,500 to 3,000 People were Killed and we know that a lot of them were Buried in Mass Graves all around the City. Some were thrown into the river. As a matter of fact, at 21st Street and Yale Avenue, where there now stands a Sears Parking Lot, that corner used to be a Coal Mine. They threw a lot of the Bodies into the Shafts. Beulah Smith and Kenny Booker, Two Elderly Oklahomans, Lived through one of the Worst Race Riots in U.S. History, a rarely mentioned 1921 Tulsa Blood Bath that officially took Thousands of African-American Lives.

The Tulsa Race Riot Commission, formed two years ago to determine exactly what happened, will consider next week the Controversial Issue of what, if any, Reparations should be paid to the Known Survivors of the Riot, A Group of less than 100 that includes Beulah Smith, now 92, and Kenny Booker, 86.

'The Gun Went Off, The Riot Was On'

On the Night of May 31,1921, mobs called for the lynching of Dick Rowland, A Black Man who shined shoes, after hearing reports that on the previous day he had assaulted Sarah Page, A white woman, in the elevator she operated in a downtown building.

A Local Newspaper, had printed a Fabricated Story that Rowland tried to Rape Page. In An Editorial, the same newspaper said a Hanging was Planned for that Night. As Groups of both Blacks and Whites converged on the Tulsa Courthouse, a White Man in the Crowd Confronted an armed Black Man, A War Veteran, who had joined with other Blacks to protect Rowland.

A Fabricated Newspaper Story Triggered The Violent Riots that left Hundreds, if not Thousands, Dead. Comm. Member Eddie Faye Gates told CNN what happened next. "This White Man," she said, Asked The Black Man, "What Are You Doing With This Gun?" "I'm going to use it if I have to," the Black Man said, according to Gates, "and (the White Man) said, 'No, you're not. Give it to me,' and he tried to take it. The gun went off, the White Man was Dead, The Riot Was On." Truckloads of Whites Set Fires and Shot Blacks on sight. When the smoke lifted the Next Day, more than 1,400 Homes and Businesses in Tulsa 's Greenwood District, a prosperous area known as the " Black Wall Street ," lay in ruins.
Today, only a single block of the Original Buildings remains standing in the area. Experts now estimate that at least 3,000, Died.

'We're in a heck of a lot of trouble' Beulah Smith was 14 yrs. old the Night of the Riot. A Neighbor named Frenchie came pounding on her family's door in a Tulsa neighborhood known as "Little Africa " that also went up in flames. "Get your families out of here because they're, Killing Niggers Uptown," she remembers Frenchie saying. "We hid in the weeds in the Hog Pen," Smith told CNN. People in a Mob that came to Kenny Booker's house asked, "Nigger, Do You Have A Gun?" he told CNN. Booker, then a teen-ager, hid with his family in their attic until the home was torched. "When we got downstairs, things were burning. My sister asked me, 'Kenny, is the World on Fire?' I said, 'I don't know, but we're in a heck of a lot of trouble, baby."

Another Riot Survivor, Ruth Avery, who was 7 at the time, gives an account matched by others who told of bombs dropped from small airplanes passing overhead. The Explosive Devices may have been Dynamite or Molotov Cocktails -- Gasoline-Filled Bottles set afire and thrown as grenades.
"They'd throw it down and when it'd hit, it would burst into flames," Avery said. Only A single block remains of the 1,400 Homes and Businesses that made up the area known as the ' Black Wall Street '. Unmarked Graves many of the Survivors "mentioned Bodies were stacked like cord wood, says Richard Warner of the Tulsa Historical Society.

In its search for the facts,The Commission has literally been trying to dig up the truth. Two Headstones at Tulsa 's Oaklawn Cemetery indicate that riot victims are buried there. In an effort to determine how many, archeological experts in May used ground-piercing radar and other equipment to test the soil in a search for Unmarked Graves. The test picked up indications that hundreds, of people have been buried in an area just outside the cemetery.

North Korea revalues currency, destroying personal savings

It's happening!

TOKYO -- Chaos reportedly erupted in North Korea on Tuesday after the government of Kim Jong Il revalued the country's currency, sharply restricting the amount of old bills that could be traded for new and wiping out personal savings.

The revaluation and exchange limits triggered panic and anger, particularly among market traders with substantial hoards of old North Korean won -- much of which has apparently become worthless, according to news agency reports from South Korea and China and from groups with contacts in North Korea.

The currency move appeared to be part of a continuing government crackdown on private markets, which have become an essential part of the food-supply system in the chronically hungry North.

In recent years, some market traders have stashed away substantial amounts of cash, while establishing themselves in profitable businesses that the government struggles to control.

But under the rules of the new currency system, the wealth of these traders has largely disappeared, unless it is held in euros, dollars or Chinese yuan.

The revaluation replaces 1,000-won notes with 10-won notes but strictly limits the amount of old currency that can be exchanged, news reports said.

According to two Web-based groups with sources in the North, that limit was set Monday at 100,000 won, which at current black-market rates amounts to $40. All North Korean currency that individuals possess in excess of that amount becomes worthless under the revaluation.

Pathetic, illegal and just another indication that the people in power don't have the moral, ethical and even intellectual capacity required to properly govern a country, company or even themselves. THE GOVERNMENT'S JOB IS TO SEE TO WELL BEING OF EACH AND EVERY CITIZEN..this is my understanding. However the government seems to be acting like a corporation whose chief goal as all corporations is to maximize profit for the owners. When a government behaves in this fashion it negates it's duty to take care of the citizens because the citizens are now looked upon as customers or consumers. Thats why its always "consumer confidence is down or consumer spending is up" and thats always the reason for all the problems... we are not buying anything!... why.... because the consumer has been laid off, or just lost half their life savings in the mutual fund plunge, or they are ill and can't afford medication or...blah blah blah... what ever it is there well being is not being looked after and that's what really matters.
LET THESE COMPANIES FAIL and let better ones come up! This crash has to happen if we are to move on. But if these governments keep interfereing there will be a greater depression than the world has ever known. And this is what they want so we will have to accept whatever they propose. Break you then enslave you! all over again. this time financially.
