Sizzla recovering at home...after accident

While on the road to full recovery, deejay Miguel 'Sizzla Kalonji' Collins will be away from the music scene following his bike accident late last month. The deejay was released from hospital on Sunday.

Last month, the artiste was involved in a serious bike accident in St Ann where he was hit off his bike while travelling along the Salem Runaway Bay main road in Runaway Bay, St Ann. After being admitted to the St Ann's Bay Hospital in serious but stable condition, the deejay was taken to an undisclosed hospital in Kingston where he remained for almost two weeks until his release on Sunday.

According to a statement previously released by Sizzla's publicist, Olimatta Taal, the artiste received several broken bones and had internal bleeding from a ruptured liver.

A source close to the singjay told The STAR yesterday that the deejay has been recovering at home since his release. They said, "He's coming along very well, he's been taking the time to rest and let his body heal."

The source further told The STAR that the deejay would be away from the music scene for an undisclosed period of time, as he will not be performing at stage shows or recording new music, until his health is back to normal.

"I can't say how along it'll take him to recover but the healing process so far is going extremely quick, so keep the prayers positive," they said.
Sizzla, who hails from August Town in St Andrew, is known for hits such as Praise Ye Jah, Black Woman and Child, Thank You Mama among a slew of conscious songs and dancehall tracks.

In June, the singjay, known for his high-pitched notes, released his 65th album titled The Scriptures. The album was produced by John John and launched at his Waterhouse studio. Sizzla was scheduled to do a series of tours in Africa, Japan, Brazil, Guyana, among countries in the Caribbean to promote the album. However, following his accident the tours have now been postponed.

Capleton’s show a success despite gay protest

Capleton wowed his audience at a concert in Brampton, Ontario, despite protest from local gay rights groups.
The protests prompted organisers to move the Canada Day concert from the original venue in downtown Toronto — which was hosting pride week activities. Capleton’s manager Claudette Kemp told theObserver that the show went well with the 43-year-old artiste holding the attention of his audience, who had not seen him perform in that North American city for some time. She further noted that the artiste has such a wide repertoire, that there was no need to re-hash songs of the past, which may be considered offensive to certain groups or individuals.
The concert was originally scheduled for the Sound Academy in Toronto, but had to be relocated after the mangements of the venue was contacted by a leading gay rights advocacy group in Canada, which had also alerted the hate crimes unit of the Toronto police.
Meanwhile, Kemp indicated that her artiste is now gearing up for his annual summer stage show and fund-raiser, A St Mary Mi Come From, which will be held at the Gray’s Inn Sports Complex in Annotto Bay, St Mary on August 5.
She disclosed that this year the theme for the concert is unity, noting that there is currently too much discord in the society at this time and therefore Capleton has decided to promote unity at this year’s show.
A St Mary Mi Come from, is the prime fund-raiser for Capleton’s foundation which supports various charitable organisations and schools in St Mary on an ongoing basis.

The Shaggy Make A Difference Foundation

The Shaggy Make A Difference Foundation has done it again.

The official handing over of medical equipment was held on the grounds of the Bustamante Hospital for Children (BHC) on Friday.

The ceremony involved the handing over of US$350,000 (J$30 million) worth of medical equipment, which was raised at the 2010 staging of the Shaggy and Friends benefit concert.

There was also the presentation of a cheque from Chain of Hope to the director of the foundation, Rebecca Packer.

Lisa D'Oyen, administrator of the Chain of Hope children's charity, presented the cheque, valued at US $10,500 (J$903,000). Three computers were also donated by Flow, and two flat screens that were placed at both sides of the tent, displayed the different equipment as Dr Michelle-Anne Richards-Dawson, senior medical officer at BHC, explained their use.

After the ceremony, guests were allowed to view the equipment which include surgical stretchers, Bair Hugger Patient Warmers, a blood warmer, a surgical microscope, examination lamps, infusion pumps, pulse oximeters, vital signs monitors and syringe pumps.

According to Patricia Ingram-Martin, acting director of nursing services, the most expensive piece of equipment on display was the blood gas analyser. This is used to determine the alkaline level or how acidic the blood is.

"It has been a long process this time around because we had to be sure we were getting everything the hospital needed," Rebecca Packer said.

Packer compared the process to childbirth as she described the preparation as stressful and sometimes heart-rending but has its rewards. "We definitely feel like we're making a difference and that's what the foundation is about," she said.

With such an astounding accomplishment, Packer spoke about surpassing this year's achievement. "I'm hoping (we will). We can only get bigger and better and I think the awareness is there. When you do a presentation like this and the Jamaican public sees where their money went, that's the impact we're looking for."

The foundation, which started in 2009, is the only one of its kind, where a concert has repeatedly pledged and delivered 100 per cent of its proceeds to its cause.

Mavado will make his first appearance on US soil Sept 4th

With his US visa re-instated, deejay Mavado will make his first appearance on US soil at the inaugural Reggae Rhythm & Blues concert, which takes place at Roy Wilkins Park in Queens, New York on Labour Day — September 4.
"This performance by Mavado will be extra special, as it will showcase his musical dexterity and the many sides of David Brooks. Mavado is a rare talent and one of the best we have seen in recent years. He has many great songs and that's the side we are hoping to showcase," explained event organiser and CEO of Irie Jam Media, Bobby Clarke .

Joining Mavado on stage will be Kenny 'Babyface' Edmonds, singer Tarrus Riley and soca star Machel Montano. Babyface is of course the successful R&B, pop singer, songwriter, keyboardist, record producer, film producer and entrepreneur who has written and produced songs for some of the biggest names in contemporary music, including Toni Braxton, Boyz II Men, Whitney Houston and TLC.
Mavado made his entry in the music business with the critically acclaimed album Gangsta for Life, which includes hit singles Fathers Prayer, Cassava Piece Radio, Sadness, Gully Side, and On The Go (Faster Than Bullet). In recent months he has been a staple on reggae charts globally, reeking havoc with Star Boy, Stulla, Mad Over and Delilah which is currently enjoying multiple spins on urban stations in the USA. He won the 2010 EME award for "Male Singjay of the Year" and is featured alongside some of rap's biggest stars in the remix of Welcome to My Hood by DJ Khaled.

Valentine's Day trial for Buju

Thursday, January 27, 2011 JAMAICAN reggae artiste Mark Myrie, better known by his stage name Buju Banton, will on February 14 — Valentine's Day — begin another battle for his freedom in a federal court in the United States where he will be retried on drug and gun-related charges. The date was set yesterday by Judge James Moody for the highly anticipated second trial in the Sam M Gibbons Federal Court in Tampa, Florida. "February 14 is Valentine's Day. We hope the jury gives us some love," said the entertainer's attorney David Markus, who expressed hope that his client would be acquitted. Added Markus: "Buju is optimistic and hopeful. He is in good spirits. He is a rock. No one realises how hard it is to fight the federal government in one trial, let alone two." Banton was last tried in September on charges of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine, and aiding and abetting the possession of a firearm during a drug-trafficking offence. However, the 12-member panel of jurors was unable to reach a verdict following three days of deliberations. That trial lasted a little over a week. The second trial is scheduled to last as long. The trial was supposed to start last December but was postponed so Banton, who is on US$250,000 bail and is subjected to house arrest, could spend time with his family. It is not yet known if Banton will be tried on the previous charges or the additional charges tacked on by the prosecution in a new indictment. The new indictment is being challenged by the entertainer's legal team, and both the prosecution and defence are awaiting a ruling on the matter. Should the new indictment stand, Banton will be tried for conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute cocaine, attempted possession with the intent to distribute cocaine, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug-trafficking offence, and using the wires to facilitate a drug-trafficking offence. If convicted, Banton faces up to 20 years' imprisonment. The United States Government would also seek to seize the artiste's assets. Banton was arrested in December of 2009 following the arrests of two other men, Ian Thomas and James Mack, who subsequently pleaded guilty. The gun was actually in the car that Mack drove.

TAMPA, Florida — The prosecution called its main witness to the stand this morning as the second day of the trial involving Reggae superstar Buju Banton got underway in this city.
Alexander Johnson, the Colombian informant who is assisting in trying to secure a conviction against the artiste, testified that he met Banton on a flight from Madrid, Spain to Miami Florida. The flight lasted eight hours, Johnson said, and a conversation about drug dealing come up within an hour.
The prosecution then played recordings where Banton, whose real name is Mark Myrie, was heard telling Johnson, "I am about making money, straight up' and "I have 15 children to send to school".
Myrie was also heard asking Johnson if he had any contacts to acquire cocaine as he was willing to finance a deal. He also told Johnson that he did not have contacts in Venezuela and Panama but that he was involved in smuggling drugs from Africa to Europe.
He was also heard telling Johnson that "It would be good to have our own contacts. I would like to start small with five keys as I don't want to take any risks".
The artiste also warned the informant that he should stay away from a man known as Lloyd Evans as "There are a lot of snitches in the game".
Myrie, dressed in a grey sports coat, shook his head while the recordings were being played. One of his female supporters covered her ears when the recordings were being played, while others chuckled in disbelief. Others seemed captivated by the recordings.
Yesterday Myrie's attorney David Markus told the court that his client was guilty of talking a lot and had made a crucial mistake of sampling contraband. He also painted Johnson as a well paid Government informant who entrapped people to get involved in drug dealing.
Drug Enforcement Agent Daniel McCeaffrey also testified yesterday that despite investigating the artiste for a year, he had uncovered no evidence to suggest that Myrie was involved in any drug deal or had benefitted from any drug deal.
The court is now in recess and Johnson is set to resume his testimony at 1:30 Tampa time in courthouse 13A in the Gibbons US Court in downtown Tampa.

Mad Cobra and Oneil from Voicemail Shot in Jamaica

Mad Cobra who was shot earlier this week has been released out of the hospital on injuries. The deejay was driving along Marlin Avenue in Braeton, Portmore when his vehicle lights had shoned bright on a group of men who became upset by this and responded by shooting the artist. Police say Cobra, who's real name is Ewart Everton Brown did try to calm the situation.

After the shooting Cobra was admitted to the Spanish Town Hospital and treated for gunshot wounds to his upper body. He is now released and back at home resting after being the second artist to be shot this past week, with the first being Oneil Edwards of the group Voicemail, who was shot multiple times in front of his house by a robber.

Vybz Kartel Banned Again

Ever since the new year it was reported that Vybz kartel & Mavado had been banned from performing in certain Islands due to the extremity of their music lyrics and the effect that it has been having on the youths. Kartel had so far been banned by Grenada, Guyana, and Barbados, but now most recently St. Lucia has also been added to that list.

The deejay was scheduled to do a huge show in St. Lucia for May 1st, but due to the kind of negative attention it had been drawing throughout the island, the committee has now come to a final decision to cancel the artist after having gone through a long two week contreversy regarding the upcoming concert.
Vybz Kartel who has never been able to perform in the United States nor some other countries abroad, had always been able to stage his music throughout the different Caribbean Islands but now that too seems to be coming to a halt, which may scream serious financial setbacks for the deejays music career.

Top Deejays Getting Their United States Visas Revoked

After the recent turn of events surrounding many deejay artists of Jamaica it seems that the United States embassy has been making some changes. After the U.S. visas of Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Aidonia, Mavado and Ricky Trooper had been revoked many other artists are being noted to have also taken the hit, most recent reports states that deejay Tony Matterhorn has also had his U.S. visa cancelled.

Due to these cancellations it has however made room for other top artists who still hold their visas to have greater advantages, although promoters and booking agents are still nervous as to whether things may also change for those artists, considering the fact that the embassy has given no specific or actual reason as to why the artists visas are being revoked. Artists who still currently hold their U.S. visas include Lady Saw, Elephant Man, Chino, Assassin and Voice Mail.

Buju Banton Undergoing Punishment In Prison

It has been reported that reggae super star Buju Banton has been transfered to a higher security section at the Pinellas County Jail in Tampa, Florida. A punishment that was given to him for giving his food to another inmate.

Buju Banton who is a rastafarian vegetarian has lost a significant amount of weight since he has been at the prison due to the fact that he has not been provided with the right food in accordance to his religious beliefs and diet.

The artist who was charged back in December with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than five kilograms of cocaine and accused of participating with two associates in a drug deal to buy cocaine from an undercover federal agent, is currently suffering with his physical and mental health.

His lawyer David Markus has filed for him to be moved to a different detention centre in South Florida, although hours from the federal courthouse, he feels that this move would be much better for Banton's health.
