Ity and Fancy to start sitcom

With the Ity and Fancy Cat Show slated to start in a few weeks, there are already plans by the comedic duo to start a sitcom later this year.

 

Speaking with THE STAR, Ity, whose real name is Ian Ellis, says plans are already under way to start a sitcom and a new series later this year.

 

"We are using this season to develop the character so that when the sitcom is released, they will already be familiar with the character," he said.

 

Adding, "We are doing everything in our power to make it happen. We are challenging ourselves to do at least two television programmes a year."

 

He said they have already begun to work on a sitcom that will surround the 'country helper' that is played by Kathy Grant. There are also plans for another series that will be starred by Donald 'Iceman' Anderson.

 

But these new shows will only start after the fifth season of the Ity and Fancy Cat Show ends in August. Ity explained that pre-production work for the show which will commence on May 27, which began during their stint in the Diaspora. He noted that while abroad they took the opportunity to do a vox pop, which is a first since the start of the show. Another first for this season is that parts of the show will be shot in all 14 parishes, starting with St Thomas this week.

 

"We have never done it like this before. We want to get some different accents in the show. We are looking forward to that. It is the opportune year to do it and it is our fifth season," he told THE STAR.

He added that two new characters were introduced in a skit that was shot in Kingston on Monday. And this is just one of many new things that will be on the show. "We have a lot of stuff being planned that are being influenced by the news of the day. Some things will shock people in a very pleasant way. We also look forward to the news to spin it in a comedic way," Ity said. For this season, he says special emphasis will be placed on puppetry and animation.

 

After four years of doing the show, Ity says it has grown in popularity and people have become attached to it.

 

"It has become one of the TV calendar events that Jamaicans look forward to. We are challenged every year to register very high on the laughter metrer Jamaicans nuh want no lukewarm thing, dem waan go pon the floor," he said, while thanking viewers and sponsors for their support.

Mavado for silver screen

DANCEHALL recording artiste Mavado is to have a major role in Shottas 2 which began filming last Friday.

The movie is the sequel to the 2002 urban classic Shottas, which starred Ky-Mani Marley, Carlton 'Spragga Benz' Grant and Munair Zacca.

According to a post via Twitter, Cess Silvera — writer/director of Shottas — said Mavado (given name David Brooks) began filming on April 20.

 

Silvera never indicated the direction of plot, but tweeted: "Mavado and Shottas 2 is a lethal combination."

Marley, son of reggae legend Bob Marley, will reclaim the role of 'Biggs' for the project.

 

Shottas, is the Jamaican term for gangsters, chronicles the lives of two friends who participated in organised crime in Jamaica and the United States. The 2002 flick had a cult following long before its 2006 American debut.

 

Last year, Mavado — whose signature calling card is Gangsta For Life — played a a gangster in American rapper Drake's video Find Your Love. Since then he has inked a deal with DJ Khaled's We the Best Music Group. He has released singles such as Emergency which features hip-hop artiste Ace Hood and Survivor, a collaboration effort with Akon.

 

Mavado will be performing in Manhattan, New York on Monday, April 30, alongside American rappers Tyga, Wacka Flocka, Fabolous, French Montana, Travis Porter and Busta Rhymes.

 

Under the guidance of dancehall artiste Bounty Killer, Mavado released his debut single in 2004 called Real McKoy. This was soon followed by a string of hit songs including Weh Dem A Do and Dying. In 2007, he released his album 'Gangsta For Life: The Symphony' of David Brooks.

 

In 2008, the artiste who goes by the moniker The Gully Gad, won a United Kingdom MOBA (Music Of Black Orgin) Award for Best Reggae Act and two years later he took the Male Singjay of the Year at the EME (Excellence in Music and Entertainment) Awards.

Sizzla recovering at home...after accident

While on the road to full recovery, deejay Miguel 'Sizzla Kalonji' Collins will be away from the music scene following his bike accident late last month. The deejay was released from hospital on Sunday.

Last month, the artiste was involved in a serious bike accident in St Ann where he was hit off his bike while travelling along the Salem Runaway Bay main road in Runaway Bay, St Ann. After being admitted to the St Ann's Bay Hospital in serious but stable condition, the deejay was taken to an undisclosed hospital in Kingston where he remained for almost two weeks until his release on Sunday.

According to a statement previously released by Sizzla's publicist, Olimatta Taal, the artiste received several broken bones and had internal bleeding from a ruptured liver.

A source close to the singjay told The STAR yesterday that the deejay has been recovering at home since his release. They said, "He's coming along very well, he's been taking the time to rest and let his body heal."

The source further told The STAR that the deejay would be away from the music scene for an undisclosed period of time, as he will not be performing at stage shows or recording new music, until his health is back to normal.

"I can't say how along it'll take him to recover but the healing process so far is going extremely quick, so keep the prayers positive," they said.
Sizzla, who hails from August Town in St Andrew, is known for hits such as Praise Ye Jah, Black Woman and Child, Thank You Mama among a slew of conscious songs and dancehall tracks.

In June, the singjay, known for his high-pitched notes, released his 65th album titled The Scriptures. The album was produced by John John and launched at his Waterhouse studio. Sizzla was scheduled to do a series of tours in Africa, Japan, Brazil, Guyana, among countries in the Caribbean to promote the album. However, following his accident the tours have now been postponed.
